How long is a piece of string? There are many factors which determine the speed at which you get better. We aim to get you better as soon as possible, you can help this by doing your exercises and making sure that any advice or lifestyle changes which are put in place are carried out and maintained. We wouldn’t tell you to do things if we didn’t know they would help.
Yes. Gentle treatment is safe in pregnancy. Please make sure that you bring your antenatal records with you when you come to a consultation, as this can provide useful clues as to any problems which would make you not suitable for treatment. It is imperative that you and your baby are safe in our hands and we make sure of this. Osteopathic treatment also stretches to giving you advice about optimal foetal positioning and maternal posture during pregnancy and indeed labour, under the guidance of our specialist Osteopath/Midwife!
Normally when you book your first appointment the receptionist taking your booking will explain the procedure to save time on your first visit. However, it is best to come dressed appropriately, so that the area you have the pain in can be examined thoroughly. This means that your time is not wasted and we can get through the whole consultation efficiently. If you are having a massage you will obviously need to be prepared to expose the area you'd like to be worked on. All our clinicians are expected to leave the room whilst you are changing so don't feel embarrassed to ask them to if they don't!
You will be seen by a registered and fully qualified Osteopath/Physiotherapist/Podiatrist or Sports Masseur/Therapist. Should you wish to see certificates these are available, however we have never been asked yet! It is important that the clinician and you are comfortable with each other. To maintain continuity and save going over the same ground twice we aim to make sure you see the same clinician on each visit. However, should this not be possible due to unforeseen circumstances then a replacement will be offered to continue the course of treatment, of course you have the option to wait for the return of your clinician.
Manipulation is a very safe and effective form of treatment. We hasten to add that there are precautions that should be taken when carrying out spinal manipulation. This is why the consultation is thorough and the Osteopath or Physiotherapist takes time to look for potential problems with any of the things they may do to help you get better quickly.
