Profile: Michael Bailey

Michael Bailey

Qualifications

  • Qualified Personal Trainer
  • Qualified Pilates Teacher
  • Qualified Yoga Teacher

Freemotion Yoga

The Ashtanga system is a set order of steps that a practitioner can work through in order to reach a state of Yoga, meaning union within oneself.  The first or primary series, called Yoga Chikitsa, which means yoga therapy, realigns the spine, detoxifies the body, and builds strength, flexibility and stamina. The series of about 75 poses takes an hour and a half to two hours to complete, beginning with salutation to the sun A and B, moving on to standing poses, seated poses, inversions and backbends before relaxation.  As a fully qualified personal training and Pilates teacher, Michael can also offer one-to-one sessions.

Is Ashtanga for You?

Ashtanga yoga is extremely popular - it is a vigorous, athletic style of practice. That being said, it has a softer side, which is sometimes forgotten. This mixture of hard and soft makes it a very popular and rewarding style of yoga. It appeals to those who like a sense of order and who like to do things independently. Ashtanga is challenging and fun. It requires cultivation of the ability to recognise your limitations and not to try to do everything during the first few months.  The practice should be comfortable and evolve naturally, building strength and developing flexibility over time. We do our weightlifting using our own body weight in the poses. Ashtanga is a great complement to many other physical activities; it will cultivate balance, reduce injuries and it will make everything else in your life seem easier.
