Specialist Midwife Osteopath
At Perfect Balance Clinic we believe in finding you the very best person to deal with yours or your babies pain. That's why we have an Osteopath who is also a midwife, which makes our mother and baby services unique compared to other cranial osteopathy and mother and baby clinics.
We pride ourselves on providing the best service we can offer you and this service is no different.
We work very closely as a team in our cranial osteopathy and pregnancy osteopathy clinics which means that we bring in team members with specialities in the service you need to get better. It is important for us that you feel listened to and valued as a client so we make sure to take our time when you come in for a consultation.
Below you will find some answers to some frequently asked questions about our mother and baby clinic, cranial osteopathy and pregnancy osteopathy treatment. If you have any other questions you can just contact us via phone, email or through our website.
We pride ourselves on our ability to make a change quickly with our unique and highly effective approach. This means that you can quickly get to the bottom of what's causing your pain, get treatment for this and leave feeling much better.
We are also honest so, if like the 3% of people who we referred back to their GP, we can't help you immediately, we will tell you. By sending you to the right place to deal with your problem, we ensure a speedy recovery. It wouldn't be right to say 100% of our clients felt better from what we did, but actually our ability to know what we can and can't treat makes sure you are safe and in the right place to recover.

What will happen at my first session?
If you decide to come and see us, this is what happens at your first session:
Your clinician will greet you and begin by asking what brings you to the clinic. From here, you will begin to go through a detailed case history, which doesn't really take long, but is essential to see what we are dealing with. Once your clinician has taken enough detail, they will then carry out an examination in all cases, to make sure your symptoms match with any clinical signs that they can use to isolate the cause of the problem.
Before continuing with the treatment, the clinician will explain in terms you can understand what the cause of the problem is.
After the examination and reporting process is complete, your clinician will carry out treatment to make sure you receive the best service.
What should I wear?
Ideally, you should come with suitable clothing/underwear so that an accurate diagnosis of the problem can be made. Usually sports wear, such as a pair of shorts and a vest or sports bra are suitable. We want you to feel comfortable; this is a priority. If you'd like to bring someone along, such as a chaperone, then that's fine too. We are very friendly but we understand that it can be a bit nerve-racking going to your first appointment.
If you have any questions, then please don't hesitate to
contact us directly.
Specialist Midwife Osteopaths are very hard to find so what more could you ask for when you are pregnant? Pregnancy is often a time when a woman begins to experience the aches and pains related to childbearing. Osteopathy is a safe and effective way to control and monitor these changes so that a woman can maintain a comfortable pregnancy. Midwives are the experts in normal birth and are able to highlight many important aspects to enable a woman to progress through her pregnancy in as little discomfort as possible, making appropriate referrals should any deviation of the normal be found. Our specialist Midwife Osteopath directly or indirectly oversees all the treatments and progress of our pregnant clients at Perfect Balance Clinic.
Being treated by an Osteopath – who is also a registered, actively working midwife – should enable a woman to gain as much information as possible into the health and well-being of her body so that she can progress throughout her childbearing years with less discomfort and more information.
Conditions that we treat include:
- Nausea and hyperemesis gravidarum (morning sickness)
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- Symphysis pubis dysfunction (pelvic pain)
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Meralgia paresthetica (pain of the outer thigh nerve)
- Scoliosis
- Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction.
Pre-pregnancy health is something that can aid prompt conception and the best start to the developing foetus. Nutrition is hugely beneficial to the pregnant woman and her partner in order to maximize this process. Natural therapeutics (such as diet and lifestyle) are considered an important, non-invasive way of helping a woman and her partner to create a healthy environment in which to ‘grow a baby’. At Perfect Balance, we have the added bonus of having osteopaths who are also qualified naturopaths to help you to make the best of yourselves before embarking on the journey into parenthood.
Structural, fluid and hormonal changes associated with pregnancy predispose the client to discomfort, congestion and somatic dysfunctions within the body. Osteopathic treatments have the potential to provide:
- symptomatic relief from somatic pain
- assistance in the homeostasis through the structural, fluid and hormonal changes in pregnancy
- support of labour and delivery (Jones and Lockwood, 2008).
Whilst every Osteopath has the goal to improve symptoms of a condition, it should be highlighted that all the practitioners at Perfect Balance Clinic will strive to treat the person as a whole and not the condition producing the symptoms, resulting in an optimal solution and management strategy to the problem.
Pregnancy is a time when women are more aware of the workings of their bodies. It produces the largest postural changes that a woman’s body will undergo. For many women, pregnancy entails having to cope with a wide range of symptoms from back pain to morning sickness. A woman’s centre of mass changes and thus poses biomechanical challenges to the spine and body as a result of adaptation to the developing baby. This can lead to a variety of aches and pains. Breast changes and increases in weight can exacerbate aches and pains, which can lead to upper back and neck discomfort as well as affecting the lower back.
It should be highlighted that the antenatal period represents the longest time period of the pregnancy cycle – 280 days. The labour and postnatal period are far shorter. Therefore, in order to create a positive experience throughout the labour and postnatal time, emphasis should be made on health and vitality within the antenatal period.
With an understanding of each client's pregnancy and birth process, our Osteopath Midwife can enhance your treatment with a follow-up in the postnatal period. This includes treatment of the newborn infant, especially if the delivery was a traumatic one.
It is apparent that there could be potential for developing health in the newborn by correcting any impairment that may have arisen from the physiological motions of birth. This means that any labour – whether it is a straight forward vaginal delivery, a forceps/ventouse delivery or a caesarean section – may benefit from osteopathic treatment. With their gentle touch, Osteopaths are able to ease muscle tightness and restore optimal function to problematic areas, as well as encourage you to carry out exercises with your baby to help promote health and future development.
Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stress and tensions throughout the body, including the head. Keeping true to Osteopathic philosophy, the Cranial Osteopathy technique aims to restore the function and integrity of the human body that is lost during injury and trauma.
When they are born, many children suffer from tension patterns and strains that may have occurred whist being in utero or due to the physiological process of labour. Whilst being treated by an Osteopath from Perfect Balance Clinic, you will receive a fully detailed consultation that will aim to highlight every aspect of the antenatal and birth process in order to apply as perfect a treatment as possible to suit the needs of the child.
Osteopathic techniques for babies include using cranial osteopathic concepts amongst other approaches, which are gentle yet extremely effective and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age. As a parent or guardian of a child who is treated by Perfect Balance Clinic, it is imperative that you leave the treatment room informed and educated by the principles applied to treat your child. This allows children to feel as though they are in a safe environment where interaction between all parties forms a healthy contribution to the development of the client. It also allows the parent to play a role in the treatment process. Often, parents can also be involved with simple exercises and lifestyle advice that complement the Osteopath's treatment of their child.
