Where have you hurt yourself? What is causing the pain you are getting?
I'm sure you would like to know the answer to the latter question! An Osteopath will be able to help you to diagnose and treat the painful area that you have, getting you back to full strength as soon as your injury will allow. You can also help yourself with regular stretching and by keeping well hydrated.
The reason many of us are Osteopaths is because of first-hand experience of how effective Osteopathy can be for sports injuries. Such injuries can be complex and need a proper understanding of the underlying anatomical structures, something that other therapies can’t always give you.

Ouch! Your back probably really hurts right now!
Take some time to read the advice on this website for your injured back. We often see people who have overdone it in training, or others who have simply been gardening at the weekend, lifted something and felt their backs 'go'. There can be any number of things that cause this to happen and it is very important to find out what is the most likely cause of the pain you are experiencing. An Osteopath can assess your back and help you to diagnose the problem, as well as start the recovery process for you, to get you back in training quickly.
Pain from trapped nerves can often result from injury to some of the structures in the neck and lower back. This normally results from an overstrain of the tissues in the neck and back, which are close to the nerves and spinal cord. It is possible to have trapped nerves in other parts of the body too caused by overstrain to the muscles, ligaments or other tissues close to the nerves, so it is important to take care when training.
Common symptoms of trapped nerves include pins and needles, numbness, tingling and pain. Pain is what normally brings people in to see our Sports Osteopaths or Physiotherapists. However, it is important to remember that the other symptoms are all warning signs that there is some compromise to the nerve. When nerves are damaged, they recover slowly and the longer they are damaged, the slower they will recover (if at all), and your training programme could be adversely affected.
The best advice we can give you is to get a diagnosis quickly and then relax; excess worry and stress will cause more muscle tension and can result in excessive tension around the nerve.

Osteopathy clients include sportspeople, pregnant women, children, older people, manual workers and office professionals. Clients seek treatment from an Osteopath for a wide variety of conditions, including back pain, repetitive strain injury, changes to posture in pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and, of course, sports injuries. The most common sports-related concerns that are treated by an Osteopath include:
· shoulder conditions, for example, rotator cuff syndrome
· knee injuries (meniscus, post-operative, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, maltracking etc.)
· muscle strains
· ligament injury neck injuries.
Following a sports consultation, where we discuss your history and examine the problem area to get to the cause of your pain, an Osteopath will then choose the most suitable course of action for you, whether that is treatment, referral, or exercises to help to get you better. Some of the techniques an Osteopath might use include:
· mobilisation and manipulation of joints
· soft tissue techniques
· medical acupuncture
· specific exercise prescription for the prevention and rehabilitation of injury and chronic pain
· taping to protect joints and injured tissues
· assessment and treatment of postural, pelvic and spinal misalignment
· biomechanical assessment of movements through video analysis
· retraining to prevent recurring injuries.
Some of these terms may seem alien to you but we are always happy to explain what we are doing and why.

97% of all of our clients feel an improvement after their first session. We pride ourselves on our ability to make a change quickly with our unique and highly effective approach to sports injuries. This means that you can quickly get to the bottom of what’s causing your pain, receive treatment for this, and leave feeling much better and ready to get back to peak fitness.
We are also honest so, if like the 3% of people that we referred back to their GP, we can't help you immediately, we will tell you. By sending you to the right place to deal with your sports-specific problem, we ensure a speedy recovery. It wouldn't be right to say 100% of our clients feel better from what we do but, actually, our ability to know what we can and can't treat ensures you are safe and in the right place to recover from your sports injury, so you are ready to train or compete again.
Should you decide to come to see us, this is what happens during your first session:
Your clinician will greet you and begin by asking what brings you to the clinic. From here, you will go through a detailed case history, which doesn't really take long, but is essential to see what we are dealing with. Once your clinician has taken enough detail, they will then carry out an examination in all cases, to make sure your symptoms match the clinical signs to isolate the cause of the problem.
Before starting any treatment, the clinician will explain in understandable terms what he or she believes to be the cause of the problem.
After the examination and reporting process is complete, your clinician will carry out a full treatment.
Ideally, you should come with suitable clothing/underwear so that an accurate diagnosis of the problem can be made. Usually sportswear, such as a pair of shorts and a vest or sports bra are suitable. We want you to feel comfortable and this is a priority to us. If you'd like to bring someone along, such as a chaperone, that’s fine too. We are very friendly but we understand that it can be a bit nerve-racking going to your first appointment.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. Osteopathy works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the integration of all the working parts.
To an Osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So an Osteopath works to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and various effective techniques to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and help your body’s own healing mechanisms. Osteopaths also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
If you know the type of service you require or the person you would like to see, the quickest way of booking an appointment is online.
If you have any questions or special requirements with regards to coming in, then you can always email us.
If you would like to speak to someone during office hours (Monday to Friday 9am–5pm/Saturday 10am–2pm/Sunday 12–4pm), you can always give us a call on 0800 0724 012.
All Osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is against the law for anyone to call themselves an Osteopath unless they are registered with the GOsC, which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety.
Osteopaths at Perfect Balance Clinic must also take part in regular meetings to make sure the standard of Osteopathy in the clinic is kept high. We like to make sure we set the standard of Osteopath care for you so you can be confident that you are getting the correct treatment and care at all times.
