Deep Tissue Massage: Advice Sheet

Share

What is a deep-tissue sports massage?

Deep tissue massage is an effective method of helping with tight muscles, muscular and joint pain, and/or restricted movement. This type of massage works deep into the affected muscles and helps to alleviate any built-up tensions. Muscles also need a good supply of oxygen and nutrients, and a good massage can help to encourage this, especially if the muscles are stressed.

Deep tissue massage can be used to work on specific parts of the body and can be used to break up any scar tissue and relieve tightness. It can cause a little discomfort for a day or two after, but the long-term results are very effective. Applying ice to the affected area can be very useful. Your therapist will guide you on deep tissue massage aftercare. It is very important to drink plenty of fluids after a deep tissue massage as toxins are released in the process, and staying hydrated helps to remove these toxins.

A therapist’s movements will be slower and the pressure a little more intense than with a typical Swedish massage, as this allows the deep levels of muscle and connective tissue to be reached. Sometimes, the treatment can be slightly uncomfortable. Always make your therapist aware of the discomfort becomes too much so they can amend their method.

How will you be treated when having a deep tissue massage?

Your therapist will want to focus on the painful area, plus any other areas that may also be causing disruption to the painful area. You will be asked to remove appropriate clothing so these areas can be worked on. Towels/sheets will be used to ensure modesty. A hypoallergenic massage medium (cream/oil) will be used for your treatment. Your therapist will regularly liaise with you with regards to treatment pressure to make sure it is sufficient for you, and not above your pain threshold. After your treatment, you will be advised on deep tissue massage aftercare and an appropriate plan of action for future treatments, should they be required.

What can you do to help yourself?

There are many ways in which you can help to keep your muscles supple, flexible, and free from pain. Exercise regularly, and always warm up beforehand. Don’t forget to stay hydrated too. Try to eat a healthy diet; in particular, ensure you are getting enough Vitamin D. This can be done by spending a safe amount of time outside in the sunshine. Smoking also has a negative impact on your muscles so give up the habit if you can!
