About Rachael Crockford

Having been a sports coach for over 10 years, helping athletes and people achieve their goals has been rewarding. Applying my coaching skills to a treatment keeps me on my toes and up to date with the techniques of different sports, and also how people move around on a daily basis. I have a strong relationship with the University boat club and colleges along the river in Cambridge.

I learned to row in Cambridge at 14, and have been involved in high-performance rowing for over 10 years, after getting injured as a gymnast. I also love a challenge and currently have run the London marathon, cycled the prudential ride 100 London and Rowed the Boston marathon.

Past experience / employment

London 2012 – In 2012 I was a London Olympic Games maker, I worked in athlete services liaising with athletes and team managers to make the experience for athletes as enjoyable as possible. Dealing with international stars I had to remain calm and professional sorting through problems on the spot. It was during this time I realised I wanted to work with sports injuries.

British Rowing – In 2013 I became a Henley stewards charitable trust coach working to help rowing clubs connect with their local community to improve the junior rowing participation. During this scholarship, I studied for my Diploma in sports Rehabilitation at St Marys University London. It was in this job I learned about how to apply my knowledge of injury to my coaching and vice versa.

Milton Keynes Physio – In 2015 I began my placement at Milton Keynes Physiotherapy and went on to join in 2016. At this clinic, I worked with a variety of clients performing massage and rehabilitation. It was during this placement I discovered my love for understanding the technique of other sports through clients including Netball, Golf, Archery, Triathlon and many more. By understanding the technique and physiological requirements of the sport we began to get huge improvements in clients recovery, working alongside the physiotherapist.

Cambridge University Lightweights – For the past 3 years I have worked with the Cambridge University Lightweights as a massage therapist. The team has currently one each year I have worked with them, and this would not have been possible without having such a close network between the athletes’ coaches and myself. It was during my time working with the lightweights that I discovered how detrimental sitting doing work has upon the body, whether at a desk, hunched over on a sofa or simply in lectures. Most of my time working with the athletes was educating them how to look after themselves during the day in-between training sessions (prehab) as well as treating the whole team for pre and post race massage.

Cancer Massage – In 2017 I met a few clients who were regularly participating in a sport or had previously been very active undergoing cancer treatment. It was these clients who inspired me to qualify in oncology massage as I wanted to be able to treat clients who are undergoing treatment/ post-treatment with confidence.

Testimonials

“Rachel’s life-affirming and positive approach has been invaluable to my recovery.

After seeing several practitioners, Rachel has been the most effective in helping me manage significant pain from radiculopathy without the need for strong painkillers or surgery. With her help, I am able to live an active life and continue to play tennis and run on a regular basis. She has guided me with exercises to strengthen parts of my body and advised me on the importance of correct posture.

I would recommend Rachel without reservation to anyone who is struggling with a long-standing injury.”
