Sports Massage Therapist

Rachael Dawson

Fitness and wellbeing are the foundation of my lifestyle. As a professional contemporary dancer, I understand fully the detrimental effects that physical demand have can on your body and your mind if you don’t look after them. Even just a niggle of pain can wreak havoc. During my teenage years, I balanced the demands of being a competitive swimmer with those of dance training and learnt the value of a cohesive approach to complementary therapies. For years I was plagued with injury as a result of my hypermobility so I know just how important it is to find a therapist that really listens, understands and wants to work with you. Being active and constantly moving have always been essential for me, however, my full-time dance training at London Studio Centre sparked my fascination for understanding the mechanics behind this movement and how the body responds and adapts. This interest led me to study Sports Massage without any hesitation and that fascination just keeps on growing.

I firmly believe that sports massage should be a regular occurrence for anyone trying to maintain an active healthy lifestyle and shouldn’t be reserved for competitive and elite athletes. Manual work can put just as much stress on the body as sports training and pain or discomfort doesn’t only affect athletic performance but also your day to day life. As a therapist, my focus is to undertake a comprehensive assessment, understand your goals and ambitions and to provide and individual and specific plan to keep you on track.

Since qualifying, I have been providing treatments in many different countries. Since 2019, I have spent 5 months with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company in Israel treating many of the dancers I was creating with. Our hectic schedule, some days being 12-13 hour working days, meant that maintenance was essential as any little niggles would quickly develop into significant injury throwing performances into jeopardy. When injuries happen, it’s not only your performance that is impacted, it’s the performance of the entire company. I then moved to Spain and spent a year balancing training, performing and sports massage and was introduced to another niche group; sailors. In the UK I have been associated with Dunstable Swimming Club, which I first became involved with as a competitive swimmer, gaining an in-depth understanding of the demands and pressure this places on young, developing bodies.

Despite specialising in the treatment of dancers and swimmers, I enjoy the puzzle the human body can present and so have volunteered at many different charity events such as Woburn Triathlon, Palace to Palace and Prudential Ride London.
