What is the “plantar fascia?” This is an elastic ligamentous band which attaches from the heel bone to the toes.
Its job is to support the foot arch and serve as a shock absorber during walking. The painful foot condition “plantar fasciitis” occurs when the plantar fascia suffers micro-tears due to it having been over-stretched.
Heel Spurs - another cause of heel pain
Heel spurs is the name given to abnormal growths of bone that occur in some people on the bottom of the heel. They are in fact extremely common; however, they are not always painful. In people with flat feet or high arches, these heel spurs will most likely cause pain. The heel pain will occur while being on your feet – so while standing and walking. What causes heel spurs? Well, a number of different things can cause them, including wearing ill-fitting shoes and having abnormal posture and gait (manner of walking). Running is another possible cause.
