What Are The Most Common Conditions
    We Treat With Shockwaves?

There are a range of common, debilitating conditions that we treat with shockwaves, to enable our clients to recover pain-free movement:

Tennis Elbow – Shockwaves can be used to reduce the pain of this condition, which is the name given to inflammation which occurs on a tendon attachment on the lateral elbow.

You can have movement restored in stubborn painful shoulder conditions.

If you have Golfer’s Elbow, which is where an inflamed tendon attaches on the medial elbow, Shockwave Therapy can be used to reduce the pain.

Hip Bursitis (bursitis trochanterica) is a very common and painful complaint, and Shockwave Therapy can relieve the pain of this.

The pain of Patella Tip Syndrome, which is caused by inflammation of the point of attachment of the patellar knee ligament, can be relieved.

Common in runners is a condition known as Shin Splints, which involves inflammation of the tibial edge and is caused by excessive strain; you can recover from this with the use of shockwaves.

If you have Achilles Tendonitis, which is an irritation of the Achilles tendon, shockwaves can speed up the healing process.

Plantar Fasciitis is a painful heel condition, you can be pain free and walk with ease again.

    What To Expect From
    Shockwave Therapy Treatment

One of our therapists at our St Albans clinic will discuss your symptoms with you and locate the source of pain. Your therapist will then mark the area which will be treated with Shockwave Therapy. First, a gel is applied to this area, so that the contact between the device and your skin is optimised. The hand-held application device then delivers pulsations to the site of the pain for a few minutes only, but this will depend on the condition being treated. These energy waves are then able to stimulate your body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

Shockwave Therapy is completely painless, however for a day or two afterwards, you may experience some mild discomfort in the muscle. The reason for this discomfort is that Shockwave Therapy works by causing micro-injury to the muscle, and this is how it is able to stimulate the natural repair mechanism, in the same way that training with weights strengthens muscles. This is nothing to worry about, as most patients experience few or no problems at all following treatment.

Is Shockwave Therapy Right For Me?

Our therapists at the St Albans Perfect Balance Clinic are extremely ethical, and therefore will ensure that Shockwave Therapy is the right treatment for you before any treatment commences. Although this therapy is capable of producing amazing results, we have to be completely sure that it is the correct fit for you and that there are no contraindications.

    Who Will Perform The Treatment?

Your treatment would be carried out by one of our professional, highly skilled therapists at our St Albans clinic, who is trained in administering the Shockwave Therapy to the affected area. At your session, the therapist carries out a full medical history in order to determine the correct clinical indication for the use of shockwave therapy on the affected part of your body.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

This depends upon the condition being treated, however it normally involves between one and three sessions. It is not advisable to carry out more than three sessions in a set period of time, as this may impair healing rather than promote it. For this reason, our standard package offer includes three sessions.

    Contraindications to Having Shockwave

Pregnancy, presence of cardiac pacemaker, over or near growth plates in children, malignancy near the area being treated, open wounds skin rashes ,infection or swelling to the area, over ischemic tissues in individuals with vascular disease, coagulation disorder or taking any anticoagulant/antiplatelet medications. Shockwave cannot be performed over the lung field or within three months of having a Cortico-Steroid injection.
