What is the role of an Osteopath

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions.  It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the integration of all the working parts. It is wholly Natural and there are no pain killers involved, we work to kill the pain and get to the source of the pain, quickly!

Our specialist Osteopaths use gentle physical manipulation, stretching and various effective techniques to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms.

We also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

How can our Osteopaths help you?

An Osteopath will provide gentle and effective treatment to optimise the performance of your body. They will help by reducing pain that you may be experiencing quickly and usually with no side-effects. Your osteopath will help identify the most suitable cause of action for you, whether that is further treatment, referral or exercises to help get you better. They will often work alongside other professionals when dealing with more complex issues within the clinic, via GP referrals or Orthopaedic Consultants.

The treatments that an Osteopath might use would commonly include:

  • Mobilisation and manipulation of joints
  • Soft tissue techniques
  • Medical Acupuncture
  • Specific exercise prescription for the prevention and rehabilitation of injury and chronic pain
  • Taping to protect joints and injured tissues
  • Assessment and treatment of postural, pelvic and spinal alignment
  • Biomechanical assessment of movements through video analysis
  • Re-training to prevent recurring injuries

What conditions can an osteopath treat?

Our team have helped a wide range of clients including sports people, pregnant women, the young, elderly people, manual workers and office professionals. Clients seek treatment from an Osteopath for a wide variety of conditions, including back pain, repetitive strain injury, changes to posture in pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis, and sports injuries. The most common problems that are treated by an Osteopath include:

  • Lower neck and back pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Disc injuries, including sciatica
  • Arthritic pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Post-traumatic injuries – whiplash
  • Shoulder conditions – rotator cuff syndrome
  • Muscle tension and tears.

Osteopathy for back pain

Our osteopaths regularly assist clients in the relief of back pain. When back pain strikes it can be sudden and lead to severe disability with a range of different symptoms. Our specialist team will work to identify the causes of your back pain and provide safe and effective treatment. Helping you to return to working order is of upmost important to us.

Lower back pain is the most common injury that we see and are experienced in treating. There are many causes of lower back pain and its important that an experienced practitioner looks at your back and deals with the source of the pain.

We often see people who have been gardening at the weekend or lifted something for example and then felt there backs ‘go’.  There can be any number of things that cause this to happen, it is very important to find out which is the most likely cause of the pain you are experiencing right now.

What to expect from your 1st session

Your first appointment with a therapist will involve a detailed case history and examination. Our Osteopaths will spend sufficient time with you to understand and explain what is causing your problems and how best to address them. They will then provide the best treatment for your specific problem and circumstances.

We usually recommend that you wear sports wear such as shorts and a vest or a sports bra – something that you will feel comfortable in but that will also accommodate the examination and treatment.

We want you to feel comfortable and so if you would like to bring someone else along to the appointment, that is fine with us.
