SPORTS THERAPIST

Syreeta Walters

I left the Armed Forces after thirteen years of service in 2019 to start a new career with a passion for providing rehabilitation through soft tissue therapy and a thirst for understanding injury mechanics. I participated in many activities in the military from high-pressure combat scenarios to elite-level sports. As a result of these environments, I saw various injuries and the impact they cause on individuals both physically and mentally.

My journey started with my personal experience with injury at a sporting festival, Bournemouth 7s, where I experienced my first sports massage, which sparked an immediate interest to want to discover more about massage. I went on to learn more about the human anatomy and took courses looking at cadavers at King’s College dissecting rooms.

Through my suffering of chronic shoulder pain it propelled me to explore more about injury, treatments, and prevention. Now I am equally passionate about helping others find their healing journey.

In sports, I represented the Army and Tri-service Netball team for eight years, competing internationally. I sustained a shoulder injury due to repetitive overhead catching and throwing. I felt the need to leave sports and exercise to focus on healing my shoulder injury whilst in full-time education closely linked to injuries and sports.

I qualified as a sport and soft tissue massage therapist in 2022 from the Cambridge School of Sports Massage. Leading up to this qualification, I gained four years of experience by volunteering service for various sports and non-sporting events with close family or friends and military personnel. I continue to gain experience working in the private sector.

I graduated with a First class award Bachelor of Science with honours in Sport and Exercise Therapy at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in 2022. During my studies, I gained experience working at the ARU Therapy clinic dealing with different musculoskeletal injuries and supported events for Pre/post treatments to marathon runners and Super League Netball players of the London Pulse team. Also have experience working as a Strength and Conditioning coach for an U16s Netball Academy, engaged in Exercise and Performance Testing Consultancy at ARU. I continue to gain experience working in the private sector growing my learning and building my profile.
