About Marsh Fernando

Marsh qualified as a Sports Therapist after completing BSc(Hons) degree at the University of Birmingham. Marsh brings in a varied skill set into perfect balance clinics. The experience working both in an elite sporting setting as well private hospitals, has given him the ability to treat and help a wide range of patient populations. Throughout his diverse career, he has worked with elite athletes both in the UK and abroad, as well as working for the NHS as a rehabilitation therapist.

He is passionate about working with active individuals to help them achieve their goals. Marsh is fascinated with human movement and injury prevention. His treatment philosophy is to find the root cause of injury beginning with a comprehensive assessment of the whole body and takes a hands-on and exercise-based approach to treatment.

His primary clinical areas of interest are in sport related injuries, pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation particularly for lower back, shoulders, knees, and the foot and ankle. He is also specialised in delivering Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy for lower limb tendinopathy.

Marsh Sincerely believes that rehabilitation of an injury is a two way street. It’s the input from Marsh and all the knowledge he carries and the motivation and determination from the patient to get back into their functional goal which sets a successful treatment plan.

He understands the effects it has on your lifestyle and the frustrations of not being able to achieve everyday activities pain-free. Therefore a treatment plan from Marsh will always have an element of activity modification, education on the physiology of injury and how to treat it the best with most effective and evidence based rehabilitation.

Past experience

Marsh studied at the University of Birmingham, where he gained exposure to neuro-musculoskeletal injuries. Work placements including Warwickshire Cricket Club, Sri Lanka Cricket Under 17-19, the university’s Cricket and football team, as well as working in private clinics both in UK and abroad has allowed Marsh to interact with variety of patient and populations. Working with both professional athletes as well as patients who wants to return to their functional goals in life.

Whilst working for Warwickshire CC through the season, Marsh experienced the intensity of a professional sports club as well as the requirements of a high end athlete. What was needed to return the athlete back to a pre injury level. As well as how to prehabilitate an athlete, so that they can maintain a biomechanically correct and balanced movement patterns. During this spell Marsh was able to utilise variety of cutting edge rehabilitation facilities such as isokinetic testing, video biomechanical analysis, hydrotherapy and many more which has helped him to build an accurate picture of how the patient is performing and progressing.

Unlike many other sports therapists, Marsh was able to work within the NHS setting, under a remit of Rehabilitation Therapist. During his time at NHS, he managed to gain a huge and varied set of skills to complement the needs of patient population who tends to present with more sedentary musculoskeletal conditions, or long standing chronic conditions. Working with Extended Scope physiotherapists as well as Orthopaedic consultants, Marsh developed a real understanding on trauma management post fracture.

His experience includes helping patients back from traumatic fractures and progressing them into a level that they are fit and capable to return to their chosen sport.
He has been working with National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society as a hydro therapist as well as delivering seminars and exercise classes for Low back pain, Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia for NHS patients. Furthermore, Marsh has been delivering Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) effetely to patients with chorionic tendinopathy with 90% success rates. (Audited 08.08.2017)
